Description
F1 Manager for PC is the official racing simulation game of the real Formula 1, Two and Three championships. You are a manager, in charge of both the car’s development, and the team’s morale and readiness for the races.
Compared to the game’s last outing, this version has a much more detailed and intricate career progression in the My Team mode. It also adds an extra touch of realism, using the actual voices of professional commentators, Martin Brundle, Karun Chandhok and David Croft.
Your duties are wide ranging: from assigning designers to work on the car’s new wings – shave off every second you legally can! – to managing the laboratories and workshops that your designers are based in. For example, do they really need an expensive but cutting edge wind tunnel to test out their inventions? Yes, they do if they are to get you the wins that you need to succeed!
Your range of duties can make it feel as though you are playing two games simultaneously because of the dual presentation. There is ‘behind the scenes’ stuff, with your research and development people, team details, the nitty-gritty of sponsorship agreements and so on – even including your emails, all accessed through a series of menus. You can even assign a pace level to drivers to assess how quickly they will pick up new skills and respond to changes.
The second part is the glossy glamorous face of the industry which is presented much as real life television shows the races to the public. You can even monitor your drivers’ tyres and comms, just like the real managers do from their small control centres near the pits, alerting drivers to changes in the weather or the advent of the safety car.
This latter part is wonderfully presented, and is bolstered by real Sky Sport commentators offering comments at appropriate moments. You can also listen into real race radio that you will be hard-pressed to distinguish from the real thing, next time you watch the racing! These wonderfully authentic touches give the game a grounded realness that is wonderful to experience.
As with any management game, the basics of the game come down to resources: how much have you got and which bit of the game needs it the most – and which will offer the greatest return? These are not always the same!
Formula 1 is an expensive business and you will spend more time and money than you thought possible immersing yourself in the minutiae of your cars’ tyres! As well as ensuring that all the cars have the right tyres in the right condition, you will be sourcing sponsorship deals – remember those emails – meeting with the board to secure more funding or justify your large budget, a budget that is needed to keep your cars in the top listings.
