Description
Metal Gear Solid: Monster Collection Vol. 1 for PC is a compilation of a range of Metal Gear games. The Metal Gear games are action-adventure stealth games in which the players must find a way to defeat the eponymous Metal Gear, a sort of walking tank with long-distance nuclear capabilities.
The series began in the heady early games of gaming, in 1987, and the games have readily embraced advances in video game design – see the details of the games and their unique innovations below. Many of these innovations – cut scenes, story arcs etc – are now practically gaming lore, but many of them began or were greatly boosted by their inclusion in the latest Metal Gear game at the time.
This is not the first time there has been a collection: the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection contained the first three games in one package, but didn’t include Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty or Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
This earlier collection also included features like screenplay books and master guides for some of the games, some digital strategy guides so players could enhance their tactical advantages, and a digital soundtrack for the various games.
Metal Gear: released in 1987, this game introduced the player in the guide of Solid Snake, whose mission it is to defeat Metal Gear. Along the way, Snake must rescue as many fellow soldiers as he can, while avoiding capture or defeat himself. It is thought to have been the game that popularised stealth games.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake: produced in 1990, but set in 1999, this game saw the return of Solid Snake, this time in search of a kidnapped scientist who he must rescue, while attempting to, once again, defeat Metal Gear – this time new and improved and known as Metal Gear D. While still firmly in 8-bit territory, this game brought in complex storylines for the player to work through, and also introduced themes: specifically raising awareness about nuclear proliferation.
Metal Gear Solid: the 1998 third game (for PC, that is – there were other games in the series that were designed for other consoles) sees Solid Snake going head to head with a rogue spec-ops organisation called FOXHOUND. His mission in this game is to liberate the hostages and prevent the rogue operatives from launching a nuclear attack. This game introduced cutscenes and used voice actors throughout both cut scenes and gameplay.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty: this is the fourth in the series, and was released in 2001. It is a game ahead of its time, dealing with many issues still relevant today, and has earned the tag of ‘one of the greatest video games of all time.’ Snake must infiltrate Big Shell; a clean-up facility besieged by the Sons of Liberty to rescue the president and prevent a cataclysmic environmental disaster.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater: this 2004 game is set 31 years before the events of the first game, making it something of a prequel. Snake in 1964 is called Naked Snake, and it is his mission to hunt down his former boss who has defected, rescue a Russian rocket scientist, and sabotage an experimental superweapon. This game is more low-tech than the other games, as it is set in a Soviet jungle, rather than the usual hi-tech futuristic worlds.
