Description

Northgard for PC is a strategy game, in which the player must start and raise a Viking settlement from humble beginnings into a mighty civilisation. Various layers are added at certain points which makes the relatively slow pace of expansion a blessing, giving players time to think through their best options for going forward.

About the Game

Unlike many similar games, this game does not rely on blitz attacks or building huge military forces in order to succeed. You can prioritise fighting and weaponry if you want to, but the basic premise of the game is more gritty and primitive than that.

There is a strong emphasis on survival, with resource growth and management being by far the most important factor in the game, trumping everything else. The land is harsh and unforgiving and will do everything in its power to overthrow the puny humans trying to eke out a living from its bounty.

You can play as the Clan of the Bear who thrive in winter, lording it over the other tribes who struggle in winter when food resources become more scarce and expensive to produce, and the weather gets cold and icy. This happens every nine months or so (game months come around quicker than real life months) and can be the undoing of your small community.

Seasonal Delights

Along with food shortages, winter ensures that other resources dwindle: firewood becomes harder to find, and any standing army incurs a terrible drain on resources. It is at this time that clans can become so stretched for resources that starvation can set in.

As far this was not enough to deal with, special events occur at any time. These can include deadly blizzards, rat plagues and other similarly devastating occasions that can tip the balance of even a marginally healthy society towards trouble and decimation.

The one advantage of the seasonal changes and even the special events is that they are programmed in, and you can see them coming on the calendar. In theory, this gives you time to plan ahead and lay in supplies or build rat-proof buildings in an effort to avoid the worst effects: but in practise it can sometimes simply make you panic as you freeze and watch your doom approaching!

Ways to Play

Multiplayer is the clear winner in this game, offering multiple opportunities for you to plan your civilisation and build your society from scratch. This is a broadly sandbox format that works very well for players who love to do their own thing. The random actions of the other players add a level of interest and engagement to the game that is hard to tear yourself away from.

There is a single-player campaign too, in which the player can follow the story arc of one man’s quest to avenge the death of his father, working to keep his community thriving as he unravels the answers to his mission.

Occupation, occupation, occupation

Your population is made up of people with different jobs: each has certain needs and brings certain benefits to the community. Here is a rundown of these:

  • Food workers: without these workers, the rest of the population will starve to death

  • Lumberjacks: these useful soul cut wood and supply firewood so your population can cook and – most importantly – heat their houses, particularly important during winter time

  • Miners: the mines are used to produce stone which is the primary building material of the community. Without this, people cannot build houses and they risk freezing to death in short order. It is also needed in order to expand the community

  • Army: armies are always useful for defeating rivals and taking all their goods. However, armies are an enormous drain on the resources chewing through money and manpower, even during summer. Armies are best used by creating them for clearance purposes and then almost immediately repurposing them as miners, lumberjacks or fishermen

Funny and great game :D its good to play it with friends :D I did play this game a long time ago, but it improve big time. The posibility to complete quests and then buy a skins for building or new leader character is just great idea.
    • Lot of fun
    • Multiplay
    • Little bit hard for bigginers
Very good RTS involving a mix between economy and military actions, active multiplayer community and smart game-play.

Clans offer different approaches on how to win a game, You cannot go wrong with Northgard :)
    • Medium paced RTS
    • Active multiplayer
    • Fun games with different outputs
    • Toxic players (sometimes)
    • Hard to play at first
Northgard is a city building strategy game, similar to the classics such as “The Settlers” series, but it removes most of the hardcore elements and makes the genre more mainstream and accessible for new players to the genre. This game takes on a Norse setting and theme with army contingent being Viking-like, as are the appearances of the buildings and other structures that you build in the game.

    *More Casual or Dumbed-Down?*
The thing this game does different from other games in the genre is that, it removes some of the hardcore mechanics such as, having to have roads connecting buildings and instead this game gives you specific locations to build certain buildings. This ensures that newer players don’t mess up their city design and are eased into the genre.

The game has a story mode with an interesting story, as well as online and co-op modes to build cities with your friends. The story follows some Vikings, who after years of searching for a new home find a suitable location and that is where you take control of the group of survivors. You are not only tasked with setting-up a new home you also have to ensure the clan can thrive and grow in this uncharted area.

    *Art Design and Viking Horns*
The art design for the game is stunning. The graphics are also up to par with modern standards. But let me explain why the art style is nearly perfect for this game. The art style gives the game a slightly cartoon-y feel without making it too casual. This one aspect of the game makes it feel very welcoming and open to new players without shunning away hardcore fans. Along with the art design, the music choice and sound design compliments the art in the game perfectly. These 2 aspects of the game elevate the game to a whole new level.

    *Better than the Older Games?*
Sadly, while I can recommend this game to everyone, I can’t say it is better than the older games in this niche genre. But I can say this is the right game for this generation of gamers compared to the older ones. Some may say this is a downgrade, but in my opinion it is just designed for the modern market. Definitely worth picking up, but fans of games such as the Settlers series might have to manage their expectations.

    • Overall good game

    • Nette Grafik
    • Super Spielthema
    • geglücktes Early Access
    • Guter Preis
    • Territorialkämpfe
    • geringe Einheitenvielfalt
    • wenig Forschung
    • wenig umkämpfte Ressourcen
    • keine Seeschlachten
It is a nice game, it can offer some pleasant RTS hours. Of course it need more attention to some details as it is still in development.
It reminds me of settlers. I could use some more depth in the game though
    • challenging
    • pleasing graphics
    • easy to learn hard to master
    • needs better army control
    • more info on what affects happiness and other traits
Good strategy game, minimalistic design and gameplay but great for causual strategy gamers and oldschool strategy fans who like old warcraft, age of empires or settlers is this must have. One of my best buys!
    • Gameplay
    • Graphics
    • Easy to play
    • Small differences between fractions
    • Parties assez longues
    • Très beau
