Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition for PC refers to the reboot of the rather negatively received original game of the same name. To ease confusion the later version (this one) is sometimes known as A Realm Reborn. It is the fourteenth game in the Final Fantasy series and is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) set in a persistent world called Eorzea.

Rather than a full-on reboot of the same game, this version is a sequel – a continuation, if you like – of the events following on from the previous version’s ending. The events take place some five years after the end of the earlier release.

About the Game

The players’ characters, chosen from one of the eight humanoid species on the playing region, called Hydaelyn, are fully customisable. Players can choose their own name, pick their gender, choose an ethnicity and define their facial features with a fair amount of detail. They must also pick a starting class choosing between Disciple of War or of Magic: Disciple of the Hand, and Disciple of the Land are not available initially and must be unlocked later on.

Players can communicate with fellow players and, as players are generally encouraged to choose servers that are physically as close to them as possible, there tends not to be too much of a language barrier. But for those who do speak other languages, the servers are pre-loaded with a number of gamer friendly and relevant phrases that are automatically translated to the target players’ language, so there is some scope for banter.

Crafting and Questing and Raiding, Oh My!

The game has something for everyone, depending on your gaming tastes and preferences. The overall story arc is excellently done, with transitions aided by well-crafted NPCs (non-playing characters) whose tragic tales tug the heartstrings. You feel doubly compelled to go along with what they want, wanting to resolve injustices, even while you have fun going off on missions for them!

Crafting is necessary and there is something very satisfying about accumulating all the ingredients and fuels needed to make the perfect piece of equipment for your needs.

For the bloodthirsty there is always raiding: sneak up on unwary villages or other players and battle them to a standstill, seizing all their property as loot!

Ride a Chocobo to a Professional Mash-up

Chocobos, the (usually) flightless bird that seems to hand somewhere between the real-life cassowary and a prehistoric avian known as Gastornis, are back in this Final Fantasy game. Once you attain level 20 you can get one of your very own. They are usually yellow in colour and flightless, but lucky players might get their hands on one of the colourful ones who can sometimes fly or perform magic.

But even a regular chocobo is a great aid, carrying you quickly to your destination, and even helping out during battles, lashing out with its beak and feet.

You can mix and merge professions to create mash-ups which give you the experience (EXP) points and benefits of both: a unique way to progress in a game as other games tend to allow only one career path.

Things to Do

  • Quests – speedy and satisfying these quests are usually offered by NPCs, and you can travel quickly and easily to your target destination to get to work straight away. Fun challenging play for valuable rewards

  • FATEs – properly called Full Active Time Events, these are large-scale public quests. Each area of the map has their own FATEs and each features five to ten challenges for you to try out

  • Levequests – these are daily, timed events that can score you a nice payday of gold (known as gil), experience and valuable items if you’re the quickest player in town. And don’t worry if you’re not the fastest, levequests can be repeated over and over, as long as you have sufficient leve allowances

  • Guildhests – brisk cross-server group play that lasts from five to fifteen minutes, an exhilarating way to test your mettle – and your metal, come to that! These short sharp contests are designed to teach players how to work together ready for Dungeons and Trials.

  • Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.
