Description

Subnautica is an underwater adventure game set on an alien ocean planet. A massive, open world full of wonder and peril awaits you!

Dive Into a Vast Underwater World

You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.

Scavenge, Craft, and Survive

After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft diving gear, lights, habitat modules, and submersibles. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.

Construct Underwater Habitats

Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.

Unravel the Mystery

What happened to this planet? Signs abound that something is not right. What caused you to crash? What is infecting the sea life? Who built the mysterious structures scattered around the ocean? Can you find a way to make it off the planet alive?

Disrupt the Food Chain

The ocean teems with life: Use the ecosystem to help you. Lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators.

Handle the Pressure

Build a Pressure Re-Active Waterproof Nanosuit, or PRAWN Suit, and explore extreme depth and heat. Modify the suit with mining drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, grappling hooks and more.

Fear the Night

As the sun goes down, the predators come out. The ocean is unforgiving of those caught unprepared in the darkness. Areas that are safe to explore during the day become treacherous at night, but also reveal a beauty that those who hide from the darkness will never see.

Dive Below the Ocean Floor

Cave systems wind below the sea bed, from dark claustrophobic passages to caverns lit by bio-luminescent life and burning-hot lava flows. Explore the world below the ocean floor, but watch your oxygen levels, and take care to avoid the threats lurking in the darkness.

About the Development Team

Subnautica is being created by Unknown Worlds, a small studio founded by Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire that traces its roots back to the 2003 Half-Life mod Natural Selection. The team is scattered around the globe, from the United States to the United Kingdom, France, the Czech Republic, Russia, Thailand, Australia, and many more places. There is a central office in San Francisco, California that serves as home base for the whole team.

Subnautica Review

Subnautica is an open-world survival game set on a vast and mysterious alien ocean. Players must explore the ocean, build vehicles and bases, and gather resources to survive.

Subnautica is a truly unique and special game. It offers a sense of wonder and discovery that is rarely found in video games. The game's world is incredibly beautiful and detailed, and it is full of amazing creatures and secrets to uncover.

However, Subnautica is not without its flaws. The game can be quite difficult at times, and it can be frustrating to get lost or run out of oxygen in the middle of the ocean. Additionally, the game has been known to experience performance issues on some hardware.

Overall, Subnautica is a must-play for fans of open-world survival games and underwater exploration. It is a truly unique and special game that offers a sense of wonder and discovery that is rarely found in video games.

One of the best single player survival game. Interesting lore and a lot of original biomes and creatures. Love it. You can follow the storyline while explore and build your bases wherever you want. :)
  • beautiful biomes
  • Lore
  • you can drive submarines :)
  • no multiplayer
It's been 5 years since Subnautica reached its release stage and since then, it grew into a wonderful community experience with a lots of QoL mods and even a multiplayer one! I can't stop adoring it.

The story of Subnautica is well-crafted and set into the beautiful scenery of varying underwater biomes. It has the thrill, it has the unknown, it has the relaxation. It's a well-rounded, AAA-style game from a small studio and a handful of people who worked on it for 5 years to get it to us :)
  • marvellous graphics
  • amazing soundtrack
  • excellent story
  • slow on older PCs

  • each games, i discover something new
Amazing game if you like exploration in an unknown world, which can be creep and thrilling at certain times. You can play it online with friends if you use "Nitrox" mod, which is 100% trusthworthy and will give you lots of funny and enjoyable moments with your friends
  • Well optimized
  • For all paces
  • Variety of things to pursue
  • Almost no tutorials
It's an insane survival game. You are like the only survivor in a new planet, and the only thing you have is the advanced technology and the hope to survive. I love how this survival game had a different scenario, instead of land, water. I really recommend it, even if you have thalassophobia.

I wasn't sure what to make of this game. I bought it off the recommendation from a Friend.

Right away, the game draws you in with its immersive and beautifully crafted environment and can keep you playing a 100+ hours with its innovative crafting system and slow but captivating plot.

I of course loved it so much, I bought the BelowZero DLC.

PS: Its the perfect game to play on the SteamDeck.
Game itself is pretty amazing and fun to play. Can be even scary for newcomers. Game itself might not be really guiding you through whole thing, but that gives you more freedom and let's you do what you want. It has also pretty good story.
  • Lots of gameplay
  • Good story
  • Can be both chill and scary
  • No multiplayer
Beautiful game over all, the soundtrack is so fun and the survival gameplay is challenging and invigorating. Totally worth downloading and if possible, supporting with purchasing the game. I would also recommend to watch a play through beforehand just to get a gist of the game. There is a lot to handle.

Introduction
Subnautica is an aquatic-themed survival exploration game. The premise of the game is that your spaceship has crashed on this primarily water-filled planet. You are aware of alien life present on the planet and are armed with just a knife. You must explore and survive, with your end goal being get off the planet by rebuilding your ship.

Breakdown
Early access done right
I’d like to start off by pointing out that this game started out in early access and has been completed. There aren’t many games that do that these days. A lot of developers just take the cash and announce the full release the game without fulfilling their promises, or don’t even release it at all!. Early access survival games are mostly seen as a cash grab rather than an opportunity to make a good game. If anyone is interested in seeing how to go about making an early access game, then Subnautica is the perfect example. The devs deserve kudos for their work and integrity.

Mediocre story, No combat
You read that right. The gameplay is ok, and combat is pretty much non-existent in this game. Your only lethal weapon is a knife in a huge ocean, the primary biome, filled with creatures that want to kill you. The beauty of this game lies in its emphasis on exploration without any combat. You are aware of the alien presence near your crash site from the beginning. You explore to discover hidden caves and bases which give you new technology that helps you fix your ship. The game might not have any combat, but it shows that not every survival game needs to be about killing everything in your way.

Beautiful World
The game is gorgeous. When you are underwater, the god rays moving make it look lifelike. It gives the water this turquoise tint that makes everything underneath, from plants, to animals, and even the terrain, pop and give it a little more edge. This ties in well with the biggest plus point to this game: the exploration. While exploring in other games may be tedious, and even feel like a chore, in this one, it fits right in with the outstanding visuals present.

What about replayability?
Sadly, this is one thing the game lacks. There isn’t really any incentive to play the game again after finishing it as the story is mediocre, and once you’ve explored everything, you pretty much know everything about the game. Although, there is a creative mode which eliminates what threats there are and lets you build amazing bases you can call home. Thankfully, the crafting and base building systems are fully fleshed out and this game mode is a fun experience.

A simple yet wonderful game
As you may be able to tell by now, this game is very simple, yet a fun experience. It doesn’t try to do much and what it does, it delivers phenomenally well. If you are looking for a casual game that you can kick back and enjoy, then this is it. Whether it is after a rough day’s work, or through the Sunday afternoon, this game will relax you and keep you hooked at the same time. I haven’t even mentioned that it is just the type of game that showcases the beauty of VR and should be a plus point for VR gamers. Subnautica offers about 20 hours of content, and would make a fine addition to the steam library of anyone who likes relaxing games with an emphasis on exploration. Definitely recommended!
