Description
Loop Hero for PC is an endless RPG, a run-based RPG roguelite, in which an evil lich (animated dead body) has obliterated reality and everything in it. Your job is to run endlessly: powering up, improving your skills and learning what hazards must be defeated in order for you to enjoy success. Unlike some other roguelikes/ lites, this game manages to remain rewarding even as you die time after time!
The hero awakens in a small camp and has to rebuild his world, a task in which he is sometimes assisted by other survivors – and sometimes hindered by those who think that everything is helpless and attack him in despair or in an effort to effect their own survival! So don’t be too trusting of all the strangers you meet!
You set off around the route for the first few times, unsure of what lies ahead, but the more you progress, the more confident you become. Routes are randomly generated – albeit packed with similar enough villains and enemies to battle – so each round is different enough to remain engaging.
At the end of each circuit the game produces a boss for the player to battle. If the player wins, successful, the game continues and the player keeps all the loot, upgrades and skills gained in the round. But if the player loses against the boss, he or she stands to lose an eye-watering 70℅ of their resources, and is forced back to the home base and must start over with their sadly depleted inventory.
Inventory management is fully under your control and must be done carefully to keep winning battles, you cycle round through loop after loop, and each placement of features and resources has a knock-on effect on subsequent loops so you have to plan carefully, laying out enough resources to keep winning, but not so many that you make life impossible for your future self. Finding this balance is the joy of the game!
You choose from several classes – rogue, necromancer, standard warrior – and your choice has an effect on your attack and defence capabilities and weapons. Loot also varies according to class, and you must learn to keep a tight rein on your inventory – it is limited, and new things will push out the old.
There is a day-night cycle which remains static while the loop gets longer, so you can have more than one day and night in a loop as you progress through the game. Once enough squares are laid down in the loop, the boss enemies begin to appear.
Each successful circuit around the path offers the player the chance to continue on to do another circuit, or return to the base where he or she can put up new buildings, such as a blacksmith or kitchen. Using the gains earned from slaying enemies and defeating bosses, the player can increase their defences, their attack, health regeneration and much more.
While en route, around the course you will find that slime spawns periodically, becoming an enemy that the hero must fight. These minor skirmishes earn landscape cards which are tokens for terrain features that can be placed around the course – these include mountains, forests, meadows and buildings amongst others.
Placing these landscape features confers benefits to the player, and these can be doubled or boosted into special effects by careful placement and combinations – for example, placing nine mountains in a 3 by 3 configuration, boosts your health levels – but also provides you with an entirely new type of enemy to battle! Slaying enemies can also win weapons and resources to use.
While you are safely at the base, you can edit the deck of landscape cards, which gives you a measure of control over your gameplay. This is important as much of the game takes care of itself without needing direct player input. Battles play out automatically, resources are automatically collected and navigation loops are pre-set – but the game still demands your full attention!
Landscape features, some placed by you, others appearing in response to other actions, all create different side-effects, and some of them work with each other to create an entirely unexpected effect!
Cemeteries spawn skeletons that you must battle
Villages are good for some healing benefits and finding lucrative side quests
Swamps, as might be expected, are home to nasty mosquitos
Dimly lit houses accommodate unexpected vampires
Groves of trees hide packs of feral mutated dogs
Other features to look out for include spider coves, war-torn battlefields, and haunted derelict houses. Oh, and for every benefit the above offer, there might be negatives too – like the gangs of thieves who hang around in villages and have their eye on your loot!
Loop Hero for PC is available for purchase on Instant Gaming for a fraction of its retail price. You will receive an official key and be able to play the game in seconds. Play smart. Pay less.
